Hey everyone!
Tomorrow Kevin and I are presenting on Collective Intelligence. For my part, my practicum is about Locative Services, particularly Foursquare, Yelp, and Facebook Places.
Here are some discussion questions to think about for tomorrow:
Do you currently use any locative services? If you use one, which one(s) do you use and why did you start?
Here is an editorial from last week’s Daily Cardinal:
http://www.dailycardinal.com/opinion/foursquare-doesn-t-make-university-cool-1.1748027
Do you agree with this article? Should the University be promoting Foursquare use among students? Do locative services change the way you experience places? Do they ruin sovereign experience?
And in case you are interested, here are a couple other recent articles on locative services (I’m sure there are many more!).

Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the Daily Cardinal article you posted about Foursquare, I have mixed emotions. I completely agree with the safety and risk argument, however, I would be curious to know how effective the privacy settings are on the application. In a way, I feel as if locative services are not only unsafe and can lead to stalker motives, but also, what is the point of telling everyone where you are at any given moment? Who cares?? On the other hand, I think the service can be a useful guide in helping new students from out of state or even out of the country to find their way around.
