There is a point system within Kongregate. The games contain tasks that award badges when completed. The more badges you earn, the more points you build up. Once you have a certain amount of points you're able to pass up to the next level. This is a big deal because the level you are on shows up in a little red box next to your personal icon so that everyone you play or anyone who visits your profile is able to see how good you are within the system. The badges are also visible to anyone who visits your profile. Here are some of the badges I have recently acquired. The badges I have won are worth either 5 points or 15 points depending on the level of difficulty within the games.

If you don't have any points and aren't in any level...no number shows up and everyone knows you're a newbie. Let's face it, that's just embarrassing. So for example, I am on level 4. I have 190 points currently and need 70 more in order to pass into the 5th level.
Here is a chart displaying the ways to gain points:

I'll have to try some more difficult games in order to gain badges of higher worth so that I can pass through some more levels before the semester comes to a close.
