Google Me

This week's task was to Google yourself...I did it twice. I chose to Google myself once using my legal name and another using my nickname. The results were different depending on the name:

Legal name:
Article in the Wisconsin State Journal from when I was 16
Scholarships won in high school (from local paper)
Awards won in college (written in local paper)
Genealogy sites

Nickname:
Cross country and soccer competition results
Half marathon results
Articles from campus paper

My nickname is the name I've gone with for my writing since I started at The Daily Cardinal. Most of the results for my nickname have to do with my work. What surprised me is that what I have written has been disseminated over the web more than I thought. Media outlets and bloggers have picked up my articles up or posted links to the original. I'm not really surprised at much else because I had to do this assignment last fall. The only thing that had changed was that my pieces have been shared more than in the past (probably due to the fact that I write for state now, so my work is relevant to more people). I'm glad that my facebook information cannot be found on google. I purposely took it off because I don't want employers to be able to find it and sometimes the smallest things (like what groups you're in on fb) can make it on google.

  1. Nice differentiation between legal name/nick name - I find the same sorts of things when I switch between Googling "Elizabeth" and "Liz!"
