Personal Homepage

Today in lecture we discussed the decline of the homepage and the rise of the specialized site. With the introduction of Web 2.0 companies like AOL and Yahoo, and other entreuprenuerial businesses began to create specialized sites with defined formats. These sites allowed users to create their own profiles, journals, channels, and blogs, however the appearance was fully structured lacking outlets for personal creativity.

I am here to tell you that the homepage has found a new life. It is not gone, in fact, it is on the rise. The homepage has taken the form of an online resume. A professional webspace where viewers can look at past work, writing samples, hobbies, blogs, or even upload the creator's resume. The key word I use is professional. Users are creating these sites to help them get jobs. Their personal URL appears on their business cards, facebook pages, LinkedIn pages, and anywhere else that will enable them to increase traffic. Their hope is that the right person at the right time, stumbles upon the site, likes what they see, and …they’re hired!

It is important to note that these personal, professional homepages are not beneficial for just any person entering the workforce. The majority of homepages are created by people in the arts, advertising, entertainment industry, journalism, and any other industry involving creativity and the production of ideas. Lucky for me…that is just what I am going into.
