Shop 'til You Drop.

After taking time yesterday to figure out how money operates on Second Life, what better way for Sal Arlington to spend her day than squandering some hard-earned Linden dollars? Today’s SL activity: shopping.

I used the World Map to locate a nearby mall, teleported there, then meandered around trying to find interesting-looking stores. Because I was still using the generic body given to me at registration, I wanted to change my avatar’s physical appearance. I bought a new eye color and hairstyle for L$150 and L$189 respectively, which translated into approximately $1.30 from my bank account.

You can see in the image below that I opted for violet eyes and a brunette ponytail with bangs. Why? To be honest, these were some of the first options I came across that I thought looked decent and maintained an element of uniqueness. Users could easily make shopping on SL an incredibly time-consuming activity. There is an endless array of consumer choice, and I’m an impatient shopper in both my primary and secondary lives.

Although these two items are the only purchases I made today, throughout my shopping experience I learned that one could also buy aesthetic features like faces, skin tone, eye makeup, lipstick and, of course, clothes. However, clothes might be the wrong word to use... lingerie/sleazy costumes more suitably describe the kind of garments available for female avatars. I started my SL session today with the intent of finding at least one new outfit for Sal Arlington, but failed miserably, refusing to garb her in the style of dress seen below.

Fingers crossed to finding something, uh, less trashy next time around.
