Hulu vs. YouTube

Personally, I think that these two websites are extremely different from one another. I know quite a few people who use Hulu to watch network TV shows online (like The Office or Desperate Housewives), but whenever I've tried to search the website for shows that I'd like to watch, I can never find what I'm looking for! I guess I don't understand the site, and how they decide which shows/episodes to put up, but I find myself constantly disappointed and heading to other sites. YouTube on the other hand is my go-to for video searching. I never use YouTube for entire episodes of TV shows, like many do on Hulu, but most of the time, I consistently find what I'm looking for on YouTube. Usually, I'm searching for a pop culture video phenomenon that is gaining popularity (Like the "Bedroom Intruder" song) or even something on a smaller scale, like "Teach me how to Bucky." On YouTube, I decided to watch one of the videos that were "Recommended to me," and so I watched a 3 minute preview of an upcoming episode of Glee (well hey there Practicum project!). I've found that whenever I'm searching for videos on a variety of topics, YouTube is often used to showcase these clips. Hulu on the other hand, is used for specific TV shows or clips--and that's it. For my Hulu clip, I decided to watch an SNL digital short called Ronnie and Clyde. I've used Hulu before to watch SNL clips, and the quality is much better than YouTube (although you could watch the same clips on YouTube), so I see the appeal in that sense. But more often than not, I don't find what I'm looking for on Hulu.

  1. I agree with you that Hulu has a more narrow and limited scope than YouTube. It's understandable, though, since Hulu is comprised of the major network companies that they want people to still buy season DVDs and perhaps purchase episodes from outlets like iTunes or Amazon.com. This tends to push people away from using Hulu regularly if you are unable to find a particular show/episode/film.
