Last night I experienced an evening abnormally free of computerized-device interaction. The reason? I spent most of this time in my car traveling back to Madison from an epic weekend in Chicago. Accordingly, prior to getting home the only contact I had with technology was my BlackBerry, sending a few texts, BBMs and using it to periodically check the time. Nothing too exciting.
However, no more than 10 minutes after I opened the door to my apartment, I promptly turned on my computer to begin this week’s schoolwork/readings I’ve been procrastinating on since Friday. Listed below are the sites I visited/how I used my computer.
1. WiscMail – responded to a few emails I received over the weekend.
2. Facebook – I’d been Facebook free since Friday… needed my fix.
3. Class blog – to remind myself of this week’s blog prompt.
4. Microsoft word – used electronic copies of various syllabi to see assigned readings for this week.
5. Learn@UW – printed off readings.
At this point I closed my computer to do the readings. Although I had temporarily abandoned my laptop, my friend (who was also studying at my apartment) had just started an episode of 30 Rock on his Mac… thus began the multitasking of reading Greenfield and Weiser while watching Liz attempt to use Kenneth as a therapist.
That was the extent of my contact for the evening… surprisingly minimal, to say the least. On a regular, travel-free evening my interaction would undoubtedly be greater in time spent using computerized devices, as well as in the diversity of my technology interaction.
