International Use
Use of the internet by the homosexual minority is not restricted to the United States, of course. Many efforts across the globe have been made to combat discrimination against LGBTs, and the internet is the perfect tool to gain access to a large audience. GayUganda is a site created by an anonymous author attempting to use the internet as a tool to spread awareness about gay rights in Africa. "[I am] talking about what I would like to talk about, with that kind of freedom," he said from Kampala."I cannot do it elsewhere." He said it started about simply venting, but then realized that the internet was the perfect tool to put his thoughts and opinions out there. He says that in real life, very few people know he is gay, but online he has thousands of followers who support him, even though traditional media would never allow this type of material to be published. Homosexuality is punished harshly in Africa, and for this type of information to be tied to one person could spell prison for the author. But quite obviously, he has found solace in his followers, the only people who know and can support him. By connecting him with millions around him, the internet has helped change the life of the author of GayUganda.
