I thought I would take a break from creating my game to explore some of the cool things people have done using ARIS. One project that jumped out at me was Bike Box. Bike Box acts as both a participatory game and a database for people biking around communities. Right now, Bike Box is up and running in Brooklyn, NY. Using the program, users can listen to and upload audio that relates to specific locations along their bike route. This allows bike riders to not only see the environment around them but learn about it as well. In one sense, it can act like a tour guide, similar to audio guides in museums and art galleries. In another sense, it allows bikers to become part of a community. Riders can listen and speak into the program, simulating a type of dialogue.
Personally, I think this idea is very cool. I do not do much bike riding, but I always enjoyed learning about what I was seeing instead of just looking at it. This application allows people to do that, and I think with some more improvements and updates it could really take off around the country.
Sounds like the creators are really making a lot of progress in ARIS. That's awesome that you're trying to make your own game. How is it going so far?
ReplyDeleteI've thought about creating a game myself on Kongregate, but there's so many games to play on the site already, I figure I'll leave the creations to the people who actually know how to make an interesting game. Good luck with the rest of your game!
HAHAH this is hilarious, my dad told me he wanted to invent one of these, too bad for him they are already invented and have copyright laws in place... Oh well, you snooze you loose. Well anyways, this gets me wondering how many sites they have, and if you can choose where to go. My dad gave the idea that you would somehow be able to get every street in a city so that you could ride and turn right or left at any moment. You could do this, or take the guide and listen to the audio, or do the guide and listen to your own music. Its a really cool thing and helps people multitask and work out for longer. This is similar to reading or listening to music while you run, it takes your mind off of things. Anyways, really cool gadget you found, I hope it starts becoming the norm.
ReplyDeleteOHH wait i get it now, thats really cool. It seems more realistic. What my dad was proposing was for someone to ride a treadmill and to have a city on the monitor that you could ride through. Lets say you get bored of your hometown, go to new york. You get bored of America, go to Italy. Your version seems a lot easier and is definitely a lot more multitasking via learning while you ride. I wonder if these two could combine into a virtual guide through places people normally would never be able to go.
