Discussion Forums on Last.fm

Hey guys! I was digging around Last.fm today because although I've been using the music libraries on it, I have to admit that I haven't explored the site too much. Today I found an area for real discussions. There's a "Community" tab that leads to different areas of discussion sections. There's spots to talk about the Last.fm website and get help in navigating it, there's areas to specifically discuss music and fans, and there's sections to talk about any topic in the news. This is the one I explored. I liked it because it reminded me of Twitter, in the sense that many people on Twitter post links to articles they've read and want to pass onto others, and that is what this section of the discussion form did as well. Topics ranged from politics to religion to technology. The post that caught my eye was one about Apple's release of Ping, as it was labeled as a "hot topic." Reading through the comments that people have made, the release of Ping has many Last.fm users doubting the future use of the website. Ping is a direct competitor to Last.fm, yet many users think that it will not provide the amount of social networking that people use Last.fm for. I haven't used Ping at all, so I don't know any of the details, but it'll be interesting to see how the competition plays out in the future.

  1. I think Last.fm will win that battle. Ping only lets you rate/review music you've bought from iTunes - or at least thats as much as I've figured. Plus Last.fm has the radio feature. In my opinion, Ping is a cool idea, but it's pretty exclusive to iTunes customers.
