Friends on PS3

For the time that I have had a PS3, I have only really played together with a few select friends that also have a PS3. Since this number is below ten, I wanted to try and make a larger network of friends. After you play a game online, you can access a list of the players that were involved in the game. When I was playing a few random players online in FIFA 11, I sent the players messages following the matches to see if I got any responses. I have since played a few matches with new players that I have messaged. New "friends" are pretty impersonal. It is possible to add a gamer profile listing information about oneself but so far I have found no one with these details. The only thing you really know about a friend is their gamer name and avatar picture which can be a bird, sailboat, super hero, anything. Although it is pretty impersonal, you do feel some type of friendship associated with the relationship.

  1. I definitely understand the impersonal element of "friends" online, both in digital games and virtual worlds. I created an account on Second Life for my practicum project, and I've had a good amount of random avatars friend me (or try to friend me) merely because we're in the same proximity. Although Second Lifers can create user profiles, most tend to be short/vague or weird/fictional. I know a lot of people take advantage and actually attempt to form friendships online, but I personally don't know a whole lot about my SL friends... which makes the whole thing kind of creepy.
